Our Gospel lesson for today begins immediately where we left off last week with Jesus and His disciples still in the Upper Room on Holy Thursday, shortly before His betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion.

In this important teaching Jesus had lots to say to these men as He warned them about the sufferings, persecution, and sorrow that they will face as His Apostles as they begin building the Church of Christ.

But He also assured them He would send them His Spirit to guide them into all truth, and He, the Holy Spirit of God, would enable them to cope with the challenges that they would soon face as His witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Nevertheless, understanding how great and difficult this battle would be, Jesus heartened them to employ the power of prayer.

God’s Word for today from Ch. 16 of John’s Gospel is part of a lengthy five-chapter discourse that began back in Ch. 13 with Jesus in the upper room with His disciples, concluding in chapter 17 in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus praying His High Priestly Prayer.

So, our context for today’s text is the night of Jesus’ betrayal, where He, along with the twelve, are still in the upper room, and we are going to remember, along with those disciples, all those things that were hidden to them and not yet understood.

And what we will learn is that unless one accepts what the Bible claims as true and accepts its Christian teaching on faith, they cannot call themself a Christian. However, that does not mean that one must blindly accept the Christian teaching or believe and trust in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world without a basis for that belief.
